I'm sure it seems suspect to bring that up now, with them in the World Series, but this has been a fact of my life since at least the 7th grade. My grandmother grew up across the Detroit River, in Windsor, Ontario. As a result, I adopted Detroit as my own, in ways, mostly because I tended to despise my fellow New Yorkers.
Anyway, I'm glad they're in the Series, with a shot to win it all for the first time since I was 4 years old. I'm not happy, though, that our ace pitcher seems to be a cheater.
On Monday, I was willing to dismiss the Kenny Rogers pine-tar incident from Game 2 as an aberration ... but now there are photos of him from the ALCS against Oakland with the same brown smudge on his hand that cameras caught in his game against the Cardinals on Sunday. I think the guy's kind of a prick ... he manhandled a cameraman last year, has a volatile temper, has a career history of being a choke-artist and a pretty piss-poor pitcher ... but now he's pitching like a wizard. He's close to Mathewson's record of 27 shutout innings pitched ... this from a guy who's ERA was 8.85 before this postseason. It's uncanny ... everything points to this guy being a hack pitcher who throws up tee-balls, but now he's throwing magical pitches that some of the best hitters haven't been able to find.
I'd be more pissed off if the Tigers were hurt by Rogers' apparent dishonesty and cheating than if his cheating helped them win the Series. I want them to win no matter what, but I'd rather it not be through underhanded means ... maybe I'm just simple that way, but while I don't believe that cheaters never win (they do win, and often), I rather been an honest loser than a winning cheat.
